Welcome to Margaret Penfold's Garden Journal for 2008

part of backgarden July 2006

Welcome to my garden journal which is now in its ninth year. This is how it all started
One perfect September evening in 1998 a friend, who was sitting with me beside my pond, observed, "A garden is fine in weather like this but for 300 out of the 365 days in the East Midlands it must be a pain in the neck."

(To be honest my visitor did not use the word 'neck' but I like to set an example to my great-grandchildren.)

I mulled over that remark for weeks. True, there are a few occasions when the garden seems more a millstone than a pleasure, but surely not for 82% of the year.

I strted this journal in January 1999 partly as an attempt to find out what gives me pleasure when I garden, and what caused pain. I wanted to investigate the painful so I could prevent its re-occurrence. More importantly I wanted to capture the joy I get from my garden in good times so I could experience it again during frosts, droughts and illness.

This page was last modified at the beginning of January 2008. With the exception for the page for January, the navigation bar at the top still links to pages for 2007.
I am currently working on revising the archives to make navigation easier. I have waded my way through 1999 and 2000 so far. The other archive links may not work when you trry them.
