Heatwaves surged and retreated throughout June and July. I bought and put together a hammock on a stand which I could drag into the shade. Lying there with a fig tree on my right, an apricot tree beyond the gum tree in front and a pine tree to to the far left with pelargoniums in the patio walls, who, I thought, needed the Mediterranean? Apart from the water, of course. I did miss swimming. So between the 10th and 20th I took myself off to Ballyine near Borris in County Carlow and went swimming and canoeing in the river.
