A cold wet month on the whole with low temperatures at night but not frosty. The apricot took advantage of a couple of days of warmth early on to set three fruit. It has flowered previously in warm spells in February before the insects are about. A hard winter suited it better but it needed a longer spell of warm weather after the cold to fruit well.
Jaqueline is one of the longest lasting tulips that I know. Both it and Queen of the night look good rising above forget-me-nots.
Results of my Memo to myself
- transplant lettuces - I sowed some more instead and the came up this time!)
- deadhead tulips
- spray and feed roses - I fed the roses but didn't get round to spraying them
- Sow Romanesco - forgot to do it
- Sow runner beans Yes but late - probably as well because the end of the month was cold
- Pot surfinias - I potted up some but the ones I neglected are thin and dtraggly. The slugs had a feast on the ones I potted up but they should recover
- plant tomatoes in greenhouse - have done that but because of the lack of sun they are behind the plantings of previous year and only the marmande were flowering by the end of the month
- sow courgettes - I did this later than usual
- buy cucumbers- I bought good plants this year- they seem to be doing well
- plant out leeks - didn't pot them up so they are still too small
