October 1999

October started with the garden showing more colour than at any time this year. Then on the 5th we woke to a frost. The damage that time was confined mostly to the dahlias. Forewarned the previous day I had already cut the flowers for the house. I had also taken tender plants indoors so that much of the garden colour has been transferred to conservatory and windowsills.

Some leeks were ready by the beginning of the month.

Once the dahlias were ruined by frost the roses revived.
