December 1999
Although we have had frosts since November many plants including nemesias and agyranthemums struggled on until the week before Christmas. (Now I understand why down south they regard Jamaican primrose as indestructible)
When the temperature fell to -6 however it was back to a normal winter. Snow followed the hard frosts.

The assorted young conifers put on considerable growth during the wet summer and are beginning to show up in the winter. I'll leave the problem of what to do with them when they mature to my descendants.

A Cedar of some sort I had it dwarfed in a pot for years. Now in the ground it is beginning to look as if it will eventually turn into a full sized tree. |
Beauty Pine I knew this one makes 80 ft when mature but it does live up to its name so I couldn't resist it |
Name unknown. I bought it as a dwarf. When it reached 12 feet I chopped it down and have done so regularly ever since It is wonderful as dainty foliage for flower arranging. |
This is a bit like a golden Leyland but more golden still. Again I bought it as a dwarf and have had it growing in a sink. I'm going to release it soon and discover if it really is a dwarf! |
I will be able to take Romanesco and brussels to my daughter's Christmas Day. I could have taken leeks but they have grown their own. Still plenty of cabbage for coleslaw.
1999-12-21 I bought broad bean Claudia and onion seeds, Unwin's Exhibition, (I can't get hold of The Kelsae)

Garrya Elliptica is coming into its own again and the circle is complete
