Goa February 2008 - The Spice Gardens

The Sahakari spice gardens were run by an enthusiastic back-to natural-remedies group.

After being welcomed with garlands of flowers and Indian dancing our guide took us on a conducted tour.
Among the many plants we saw were
vanilla plant
Jack fruit thatare used as vegetables when small and fruit when large. They can grow enormous but we only saw small ones The vanilla plant is an orchid. In its native habitat it is pollinated by humming birds but in most parts of the world it has to be hand pollinated to produces the world's second most expensive spiceThe coffee tree with berries that each contain two beans. They do not ripen if picked green.
We watched a boy climbing for betel nuts
He's reached the topHe's moving from one tree to another He's coming down
We then went to the dining hall where we were treated to a pre-lunch lecture on the medicinal and dietary benefits of the spices used in the food we were about to eat, and enjoyed a very palatable lunch.
