I have many yew saplings growing in awkward places, so entangled with other plants I cannot easily photograph them. Their parent must be the large yew in my neighbours' garden, but that tree is so surrounded by other conifers, again I cannot take a clear photo.
Yew trees are often found in English churchyards. I believe there was once a law that every English village churchyard should have one to provide wood for the famous long bows. However, yews are such slow growers that I suspect this was not so much an order to plant new trees but rather a prohibition against felling ancient trees that had served some pre-Christian purpose. |
