Margaret's Garden Journal for October 2011

The met service got its October forecast well and truly wrong this year. They prophesied snow and freezing weather in October but the month opened with the warmest day of the year and although there were chilly and windy days the monthly average was higher than usual ((but no frost at in our area) Some trees shed their leaves early but that had more to do with drought than cold. I have never seen the ground so dry in late October.
The birds have not yet settled into berry -eating mode. The red berries of the pyrecantha and holly stayed untouched the whole month. Usually as soon as the berries turn colour they vanish.
Gardening has been difficult for me. My left leg has become so painful I had to ask someone else to dig the holes for my tulips while my only conribution was dropping them into the holes and raking soil over.
