Margaret's Garden Journal for July 2009

In the back garden

This is the month of lilies and crocosmia. In my garden regal lilies and c. lucifer are the first to open. The shorter dahlias are already starting to flower. We have had considerable rain so by the middle of the mont the back garden has recovered from the short spell of searing heat and is lush in many shades of green. Despite that patches of bare soil in the front garden still mourn the forget-me-nots.
Surfinias have probably reached their peak on the walls of the oudoor loo and the andcient remnants of a brick pig sty

Down at the bottom of the garden in the fruit and vegetable patch strawberries are already over and lettuces have begun to bolt. I must stock up with earlier and later varieties of strawberries. My daughter served Sonata for dessert today. The flavour was good. I might order some. When it comes to lettuces I must concentrate on Webbs Wonderful.
Loganberries were sweeter this year, probably because although we have had plenty of rain and wind we have so far had more sunshine than the previous two years. The thornless blackberries are reddening already by the middle of this month. I am away in Ireland from the middle to the end of the month so I guess I will miss most of them. The tayberries and summer raspberries are also over.
